First of all I want to say that all information in
this section is personal opinion, gained by experience. There are many
things to consider when buying a Quarter Midget. The first is New or
Used.... I personally started with a used car and had a great
experience, however there are many people that do not have the same
result. You need to spend some time at the race track getting to know
people and asking lots of questions. Watch the cars that are on the
track and see what is for sale locally. Since I am a new Car Dealer, I
would Love everyone to purchase a new car , but reality is that not
everyone can afford to do that. So below is information to help you make
the best cost effective decision you can for the whole experience. |

New Cars |
|
| |
Buying a new car has its advantages, the
biggest being that everything is new and you do not have to question
condition of car and equipment! The only decisions you have to make are,
type of chassis and size of car. |

Chassis |
|
| |
There are many different
kinds of cars out there and many different people that would tell you
that their car is the best. I started out with one type of chassis and
changed after 2 years. People make these decisions for many reasons,
Style of car, ease of setup, number of races won, etc.......I would
suggest asking lots of questions to many different handlers and then put
all of that info together and make your decision. A couple of things
that you need to make sure of are, Size of chassis, ability to grow with
driver.
Size of chassis has to do with growth of child. There are 3 main
sizes for most cars, 76" 78" 80" cars. As a child grows they may need a
bigger chassis in order to have leg room, or if you are installing a
race seat you may need the extra room. Depending on the age / size of
your child you could buy a car and within a year have to buy another one
that is bigger. it is more cost efficient to buy a car that you can grow
into for a couple of seasons. You have to be careful not to buy a car
that is too big because then your child will have a hard time driving
the car, and that will result in frustration for you and your driver.
Just make sure that when your driver sits in the car there is leg room
for pedal adjustment and that they feel comfortable in the car.
Grow with driver?? what I mean by this is the ability for the car
to be adjusted to keep up with the driver abilities. As the Childs
ability to drive the car grows, the car must be able to be adjusted to
keep up with them. I have found that Coil over cars have more
adjustability than torsion bar cars. The torsion bar cars are usually
cheaper but you may find yourself having to buy a new car when your
driver wants more adjustments that can be done with this type of
chassis. Most New cars are built as Coil over cars .

Condition |
|

When Buying a used car you
need to look at a few things. Look over the chassis for the
following.........
1- Chassis welds- not cracked or re welded
2- Rust inside the tubes of the chassis
3- Bent or twisted tubes on the chassis
4-Spliced tubes on the chassis
5- look at all shock mounts and nerf bar mounts for cracks or damaged
threads |

Extras |
|
| |
Many times when buying a used car you may
be inticed by extra items that are being thrown in, Driving suits,
Helmets, tires, rims, engines, etc... although this is good ,make sure
the stuff being offered is QMA legal and fits the car you are buying. |

First Things First |
|

Congratulations you have
purchased your first Quarter Midget!! Now things to do befor you ever
go to the track. These simple things will save you time and
frustration.
1- Buy a note book for parts list and basic set up information
2- Measure all radius rods and steering rods on car
3- Measure all tire sizes and rim sizes
4- Measure your chassis distances between front and rear axels on
both sides
5-Part numbers from spark plugs, bearings,
6- find out type of engine oil and amount used for your engine.
Make sure you write down all of this information, it will be very
useful for you one yuhave the first collisoin with the wall or other
car... you will know exactly what you need and will not have to guess.
thios is where you save yourself frustration, because it is not a matter
of are you going to bend something but when is it going to happen. A
quick note, if you have repalcement rods already made it will help you
when you are at the track and something happens... |
